Bank of Walker County boasts two hometown branches, with the most recent addition, the Smith Lake Office, situated in Curry. Since the branch's grand opening in July 2022, Jackie Sparks has been at the helm, overseeing the branch's operations.

Jackie's journey to the banking industry is a narrative woven with local ties and professional growth. After graduating from Curry High School in 1988, she pursued further education at Walker College and the University of North Alabama (UNA), culminating in a degree in communications and marketing. Returning to her roots in 1992, Jackie initially joined First National Bank in Jasper, where she intended the position to be temporary. However, her dedication and adaptability resulted in a full-time role, progressing from a teller to various other positions. When the decision was made to open a branch in Curry, Jackie seamlessly transitioned into the role of assistant manager, a position that resonated with her as "home."

In 2020, Jackie faced a change in her professional trajectory when the Curry branch of First National closed. After spending a couple of years substitute teaching and bookkeeping at Curry High School, her expertise caught the attention of the Bank of Walker County in 2022. They were in the process of establishing a branch in Curry and sought Jackie to lead the team. It was an easy yes, but she had one non-negotiable condition for taking the job: "I've got to have my team back." With her team back in place, the Curry branch opened its doors in July of that year.

Today, the ensemble of loaded bookshelves in the lobby adds a distinctive touch to the bank's ambiance. Jackie and her team, known for their love of literature, initiated a small library, with contributions pouring in from customers and community members. This endeavor has created a unique space, fostering community and camaraderie.

Jackie proudly states, "Curry is a community that takes care of itself. Our little community made a free library right here!"

Beyond her banking responsibilities, Jackie remains involved in the Curry Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, serving as a member and the current treasurer. She humorously admits, "I would be less than useless in an actual emergency, but I can write a check!"

Whether you spot Jackie at the bank, school, or the fire department, her dedication leaves an indelible impact on the community she holds dear. Her multifaceted contributions extend beyond banking, exemplifying a commitment to enriching the lives of those who, like Jackie, call Curry home. 78
